MINDFULNESS · EVERYDAY LIFE

A five-minute breathing pause

A pause doesn't have to be big to matter.

Original beach meditation recording at sunset

Some days we go straight from one task to another. My yoga and meditation practice taught me to value brief moments of awareness, even if I only have a few minutes.

Back to the body

Find a comfortable position, feel the support underneath you and notice your natural breathing. A perfectly quiet mind isn't required.

When attention drifts, gently notice it and return to the breath.

A small practice

Spend one minute settling in, three minutes noticing the breath, then a minute checking in before continuing.

If focusing on your breath feels uncomfortable, stop, open your eyes or try another way to pause, such as a short walk.

What a pause can teach us

Calm doesn't need to become another task. Ask how your energy feels and what you might need next.

Sometimes a meaningful pause happens right between two ordinary tasks.
