More data isn't always better data. Before analysis, understand how suitable your sources are for the question at hand.

Six useful dimensions

Start with clear questions and document what you find.

  • Completeness: what is missing?
  • Consistency: are definitions aligned?
  • Validity: do values follow expected formats?
  • Uniqueness: are there duplicate records?
  • Timeliness: when were data updated?
  • Traceability: can we explain sources and transformations?

Before building your dashboard

Agree on definitions, review outliers and record limitations. A polished chart cannot repair missing or misunderstood data.

  • Write down assumptions.
  • Document filters and periods.
  • Flag unsupported conclusions.
Data quality also shapes the experience of the people who rely on the information.
