Research doesn't start with a survey. It starts with a useful question. This short guide walks through turning uncertainty into conversations and evidence.

1. Frame the learning goal

Write down the decision your team needs to make and the evidence missing today.

  • What problem are we trying to understand?
  • Which assumptions need to be checked?
  • What could change once we learn more?

2. Match the method to the question

Interviews can illuminate motivations, surveys can explore a defined pattern and usability sessions reveal friction in concrete tasks.

  • Interviews for context and stories.
  • Surveys for structured, measurable answers.
  • Usability tests for observed behavior.

3. Make insights actionable

Separate observations from interpretation and bring the evidence back to design decisions.

  • Protect participant privacy.
  • Look for patterns and contradictions.
  • Share implications, questions and next steps.
A useful insight helps the team make a better decision.
